Bega Falls, Mindanao, Philippines
Its been four years since the last time I visited Mindanao, the southern part of the Philippines. To get there is a 1 hour flight from Manila. But now, it's time to go back to Mindanao.
Welcome to Mindanao, and today, we're going to Bega Falls.
Bega falls is located in Prosperidad, Agusan Del Sur. Let me tell you this honestly, I've never heard this Bega Falls before.
How to get there?
If you're from Manila, book a flight to either Butuan City in Agusan del Norte or Davao City. If you choose the Butuan Flight, much better. As you land in Butuan, it is a one hour trip to Prosperidad. Since there's only few flight schedules to Butuan, try Davao flight. From Davao, it will take you around 4 to 5 hours to Prosperidad.
Now that you've booked your flight and arrived. Here's some good tip:
- If you are from Butuan City, ride a bus bound for Davao and alight at the Awa Junction
- If you are from Davao City, ride a bus bound for Butuan and alight at the Awa Junction
Here's a map to show where the Awa Junction is.
The journey doesn't end there. From the Awa junction, you have to ride a motorcycle, the locals called it the "habal-habal". Just approach the driver and tell them that you are going to Bega Falls. It will cost you around Php 100 for a one way trip fare. You will register and get guides at the Baranggay Hall. It is required for you to have guides for safety. After that, you will proceed to the starting point where you can go down to the falls by stairs. Oh yes, stairs.
Before, you will descent down to the falls by trekking. But since the place is partially developed to promote this place for tourist, they added a stairs. but still advisable to wear shoes.

Fun Fact
How many steps? -- 396 steps with resting place along the way
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now you accomplished the 396 steps of going down, you've reach the second part of the falls. The first falls is located downstream. According to some bloggers who first went here, you will take a challenging part to get to the first one.
The other falls was up there. To get there (when we went there) is a very short but a difficult one.
In order to get to the third and the fourth falls, you will take a 2 to 3 minute trekking going up.
I think we've missed the third falls, but anyway. After a short hike, we've reach the fourth falls. Enjoy the cold but relaxing water, as well as the relaxing sound of the clear, flowing water from the falls.
As you can see, the water is clear and you can clearly seen the rocky flooring. The water is cold, and you will feel relaxed after that challenging hike. Just make sure not to go nearer the falls because that is the deep part.
There's already a cottage here. Signs that this place is undergoing development to promote for tourist and local visitors.
Now its time to leave the place. Pick-up your trash, don't leave it there, bring it. Descent back to the second falls and prepare for a 396 steps going up. It is advisable to rest in every rest stop. Don't try to boost up as the steps are somehow steep and slippery. As you've reach the top, it's time to go back by "habal-habal" going back to Awa Junction and ride a bus.
Maintain the cleanliness as you visit Bega Falls. This place is a treasure to me. A majestic place like this must be given a huge respect. A guide ask me "Are you going back to Bega Falls?".... Oh YES, Yes I am. It is a journey you will never forget and it feels like you want to go back here for more.
